It has been beautiful this summer along the Bay! It is quite refreshing after the LONG and stormy winter months. You would think it would be a given for California to be warm and sunny in the summer, but not in the Bay Area. It is usually cold, until October. I am enjoy a nice evening on the deck with work, my homemade cinnamon roll, and a smoothie. Mila, the kitten, is laying next to the screen door, because she is attached to Momma... kittens.. sweet kittens. So! Have you wanted to make and drink smoothies more often to ensure you are getting more fruits and veggies, however, the blender is too noisy in the morning--or mornings are just out of the question? I am here to help! I know the feeling of morning madness. There is barely enough time to get ready, pack the lunch, send the kids off to school--I am only presuming here, because kiddos have not arrived in the Green household yet--eat breakfast, and leave for work yourself. Or maybe you have an infant and it is easier to grab chips from the bag, while making sure the baby is cared for, or chores are getting done. In my house, I am the first one up in the morning. 5:30am. I have been wanting smoothies for breakfast or snack while at work, but there is no way I am going to turn on the blender at 6 in the morning while my husband is sleeping 10 feet away. Not going to happen. I have also tried the ice cube tray trick. You know, the one where you make the smoothie the night before, freeze it in an ice cube tray, then try to dig the cubes out the next morning so you can take it to work. Only to find out that the 20 minutes you spend digging the cubes out was a waste of time, because the cubes don't thaw out by the time you want the smoothie. Nightmare. Here is an easier way.
Initially, this is going to be time consuming, because you are going to prep your weeks worth of smoothies at one time; however, it will save you time in the mornings. I made 12 smoothies (1 for me and my husband each day of the week) and it took me an hour. So, if you are making smoothies for less days and less people, it should take you less time. I suggest making them on the weekend, so they are ready to go before the weekday madness begins. After each smoothie you prep, poor it into a mason jar; but, ONLY fill up to the neck of the jar. The neck is towards the top of the jar where it curves right before the top. You don't want to fill the jar completely, because the glass might break when freezing, as things expand when they freeze. If your mason jar does not have a neck, then leave about 1-2 inches at the top for room for the liquids to expand. For the mason jars, I used the 16 oz jars. Then the night before the day you want the smoothie, take the smoothie out of the freezer and put it in the fridge. The smoothie will thaw in the fridge and be ready for you the next day!
