What is Padlet exactly? It is "a blank wall to post"! As a few tag lines say. There is such a wide variety of interactive qualities to Padlet.
What can you do with Padlet?
How it Works.
Padlet is one of the easiest tools to set up for student use. First, choose the layout that you want the Padlet boxes to be displayed with.
Then, begin designing your Padlet look! The center page is where you will see the preview of the design. The right hand column is where you will create the design.
Looking at the column on the right, first, write the title and description. There are many items you can write here. Whatever works best for you and your students. For my classroom, I write the question in the "title" section and the sentence frame I want them to use in the "description" section. This ensures that my students have the sentence structure I want them to use. It also helps lower their effective filter, because they have the question AND frame right in front of them and they do not have to worry about searching for the frame else where. If I have a variety of frames for them to use, I will type the frames for them on paper, print them out, and give them each a copy.
After you have written your title and description, change the wallpaper to one that suits the theme of the unit, question, or one that you like best. You can also add a cute icon that will appear next to the question at the top of the Padlet.
Under "posting", there are options. I usually choose the attribution option, although it doesn't always work. I have not had students add comments to others, but that would be a great tool for collaboration or teaching about feedback. Once ready click "next" at the top of the column and it will take you to the Privacy page. Depending how I am using the Padlet-- with my students or for my PLN-- I will either keep the Padlet a "secret" or set to "public". With students I keep it a secret. This ensures that only my students will see the Padlet. Clicking on the "Those with access can.." option will give you a brief synopsis of each item. Choose which best fits your needs. I typically use "can write" in my class. Click "Next", when finished. Then click "Start Posting". In order for your students or PLN to view your Padlet and be able to contribute, they need the link. In my classroom I post the link in our Google Classroom, so the students have quick access to it and everyone is on the same page. I upload the Padlet as an "announcement" in GClassroom. See Google Classroom page on how to add an announcement. When you're Ready to Share your Padlet.
1. Click "Share" in the top right corner.
2. Click "Share/Export/Embed" 3. Choose your sharing method (If choosing "copy link to Padlet", click once and it will be copied). 4. Paste link in desired sharing location. 5. You are ready to go! How to Write in Padlet.
1. Double click anywhere on the Padlet wallpaper.
2. In the "title" section, this is your choice. I prefer a name to go here, because the program doesn't always include the participant's name. You can also have them write the title of their post. 3. In the "description" section, participants will write their responses. Click on the section to begin writing. 4. Underneath the "description" section you have more options to add things to your Padlet response: voice response, video, attachment from the web or computer, picture, or document. **Caution for this: Set guidelines for student postings. In the event you are typing and you do not want to keep your post, there is a small trash can icon in the top right of the small Padlet box to discard the post. If you accidentally click outside of your Padlet box while typing, either double click where you were writing or click the pencil icon to continue. To help guide students when the Padlet activity is new, I teach them how to post a Padlet comment, but I also include an instruction box on the actual Padlet Wallpaper, so they don't have to ask me when they forget.
